WELCOME

Amazing women! Columbia Home & Lifestyle magazine is primarily run and produced by women, and they are a superb group — if I do say so myself. Our readership is mainly female, and I’m sure you’re all fabulous. We do our best to fill our pages with amazing women you want to read about and articles and information that is interesting and relevant to you as women.

We’ve focused on some women in the arts whom I know you’ll find fascinating and inspiring. Naoma Powell (My Favorite Things, page 104) is the doyenne of Columbia’s arts community. Her life’s work with Access Arts has enriched our community immeasurably. Kerri Yost (Artist Snapshot, page 63) is a young documentary filmmaker who is bringing the Citizen Jane female film symposium to town.

The fashion and beauty sections are loads of fun. You’ll enjoy getting to know some of our local retailers of women’s fashion. This was a great shoot to do. We asked the ladies to show off their wares and themselves and the results are gorgeous. For beauty, Nancy Yang makes a spectacle of herself getting rid of her “readers.” What a hoot!

But it’s not all frivolous. We are starting a series on financial health for women and are kicking it off with some basic steps for getting your finances in order. Thanks to two more amazing women, Jo Mooney and Sabrina McDonnell, for giving us their advice. Our Before and After house seemed to be made for this issue: the McIntosh’s brought the great outdoors indoors and created some terrific summertime space for themselves and their family. And our Historic Home is a fascinating story. Thank you to the Blaylocks for their participation and for maintaining a piece of local history.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars now for some special events in October. We are proud to be the media sponsor of the Verizon Wireless Flat Branch Park Family Area for the Roots ‘N Blues ‘N Barbeque Festival, which takes place on Oct. 3 and 4 (please see page 66 for details). Women with Wings, a community arts project for women, will be taking place Oct. 9 through 12. The preview event, which took place in April, is covered on page 74.

And I’d like to welcome our newest staff member, Rita Flórez. Rita is joining us as Managing Editor of the magazine. We are happy to have her on board.

I need to talk about one more amazing woman. Our community lost a valued and beloved member July 7, 2008. Sarah Becking, a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend and gifted photographer, passed away at the age of 36. Her work has graced our pages recently, and she graced the lives of everyone who knew her. She will be missed more than words can express.
